It's time for an el guanaco review! woohoo! our favorite unassuming little yellow house off prospect road chucking out some really good mexican/el salvadoran tastiness. We've been coming here for many years and have witnessed firsthand its evolution from a bare bones restaurant to a bustling dining room with movie posters, booths, and A/C! my fondest memory here is coming in and seeing someone in the kitchen pounding out those fresh corn tortillas, mmm mmm. Everything is freshly made from scratch while being fully visible from the dining area. In the corner, is a television FEATURING a soccer game or a "telenovela", which my mom enjoys. At times, a month or two would pass between our visits to el guanaco and we would always notice an improvement in its decor. Nowadays, El guanaco has stepped their game up interior-wise and it shows in its eclectic mix of clientele compared to previous years.
Our experience here is always satisfactory. My girlfriend even SURPRISED me with a b-day party at el guanaco and reserved the whole restaurant all to ourselves. The staff is always super ACCOMMODATING, even with last minute reservations on a weekend night. Good and fun attitudes are the norm here. Never an unsatisfactory moment at this establishment.
now for the main event! the food here is a blend of salvadoran and mexican cuisine. I could probably stop there but let's keep going. If there are two things to order here, its the pupusa and tacos. the pupusa mixta comes stuffed with melted cheese, chorizo, and refried beans. as for the tacos, I only order the lengua tacos, which is cow tongue. you might be making a face right now, but i promise you it's so eff'in good that it has converted many of my anglo friends to the tongue-side. Everything here is DELICIOUS, from the oxtail, tamales, and soups. if you're an adventurous eater you will definitely be rewarded at el guanaco. one word of advice, check out the specials board, there's always something that'll catch your eye. I've sent many southern californians here and it's good enough to even get them hooked. If that isn't your sign to come here I don't know what is, maybe a slap upside the head? Maybe? Anyway, I have yet to eat a better taco in florida so far, and YES i have been to tacos al carbon!
El guanaco breezes by with 3 forks out of 5. It is mind-boggling how a place can provide its diners with amazingly tasty food at the prices they charge. You leave here feeling like you just robbed the place. On average, with two people and beers we have walked out of here with a $40 bill including tip. This place is consistent in its service as well as its food. Again, it is very rare that my girlfriend and I continuously go back to a place so often when there are so many places out there to try, but el guanaco is our go to for tacos and pupusas. in summation, this place provides you maximum value when it comes to the dollar/flavor ratio.
